Guided city tours in Cologne
Encounters with a very special city
Cologne is more than just the cathedral. Cologne is 2000 years of history, it is also the people who live here and the joie de vivre that you can feel on every street corner.
Heinrich Böll once said about his home town: “Cologne is not perfect, but it is completely Cologne.”
So there is a lot to discover in Cologne.

Cologne is not just the cathedral, Cologne is also the old town, the Rhine, the neighborhoods, the people, the language: Cologne is a feeling. On this tour, we will show you the most important sights, tell you exciting anecdotes from Cologne’s history and explain why the people of Cologne are the way they are. We will see, among other things: Cathedral, Alter Markt, Heumarkt, Heinzelmännchenbrunnen, Old Town, Town Hall Tower
From Heumarkt to Chlodwigplatz
We start at Heumarkt, walk past the Malzmühle to the beautiful church of St. Maria im Kapitol. From there, we walk along the old Roman Cardo Maximus, the main road towards Bonn, in the direction of Südstadt. It is a tour through the centuries, we meet Romans and bishops, brewers and workers, but also St. Severin and the chocolate girl. We see, among other things: Heumarkt, Malzmühle, Overstolzenhaus, St. Maria im Kapitol, Severinsstraße, St. Gregorius im Elend, Karl-Berbuer-Brunnen, St. Severin, Kartäuserkloster, Severinstorburg
Along the Rhine – 2000 years of history
It has been sung about in many songs, the Rhine was often a blessing for Cologne and sometimes a curse. We walk from the Bastei to Heumarkt and discover many traces of 2000 years of the city’s history. We change sides of the Rhine twice and enjoy the beautiful Rhine panorama. There is a lot to tell about the former ports in Cologne, the rivalry between Deutz and Cologne and how the people of Cologne crossed the Rhine. We see, among other things: Bastei, Hohenzollern Bridge, love castles, Rhine promenade, Deutz Bridge, water gauge, banks of the Rhine.
Of Clovis, Severin and the chocolate girl
The Severinsviertel has always been pure Cologne and some residents consider it the “most Cologne” of all districts. The Cologne dialect is still spoken here and you can meet many Cologne originals. Not for nothing is this a center of carnival and many Cologne songs and anecdotes are set here. BAP was founded here and there is a cozy pub on every corner. We start at Chlodwigplatz and visit special places where history has played out and where there is a lot to tell. Find out more about Clovis and Severin, Jan and Griet and the chocolate girl. We see, among other things: Severinstorburg, Ulrepforte, Carthusian monastery, Severinsstraße, St. Severin
The 1920s were not only an exciting time full of upheaval and new beginnings in Berlin. There were also many changes in Cologne, the city was occupied by the British, there were many variety shows and at the same time great poverty and a great zest for life. I want to tell you about this exciting time and look for traces of this era in Cologne with you. We will see, among other things: Rudolfplatz, Ringe, Friesenviertel, Neumarkt, Disch-Haus, Hohe Straße, Cathedral
From the Kunibertspütz to the chamber of horrors
A stroll through the Kunibertsviertel and the Eigelstein, two old Cologne districts. Life has been pulsating here for almost 2000 years and many cultures have left their mark. Come with me into the vibrant city of Cologne. We will see, among other things: St. Kunibert, Weckschnapp, Bastei, Eigelsteintorburg, Stavenhof, St. Ursula, Brauhaus zur Schreckenskammer
Deutzer Freiheit and schäl Sick
This tour goes through Cologne-Deutz, independent until 1888 and in many ways something of an antithesis to Cologne for centuries. We start at the Düxer Bock, which has nothing to do with the Hennes, and walk in a large loop past the train station and the trade fair to the banks of the Rhine. Soldiers, inventors, railroad workers, merchants, priests and monks, Jews and Catholics all lived here. They all left their mark, which we will show you and tell you the stories along the way. Among other things we see: Düxer Bock, Lommerzheim, Ottoplatz, Deutzer Bahnhof, Messehallen, Messeturm, Tanzbrunnen, Rheinpromenade, Alt St. Heribert, Deutzer Brücke
Melaten – Where Cologne lives forever
Melaten is not just a cemetery, Melaten is urban history, art history, a landscape conservation area, a cultural space and an oasis in the middle of the city. Before Melaten became a cemetery over 200 years ago, it was already a place of execution and leprosy far outside the city gates. Today, the cemetery is the final resting place for many Cologne residents; there are around 55,000 graves here. And since we live in Cologne, this is of course also the place for many stories and anecdotes. Come with us to this special place in Cologne’s past and present.
Our city walks in Cologne last about an hour, are often during the week and are intended for Cologne residents who can’t get enough of their city:
City walk – From Hansaring to the cathedral
This walk takes us through corners and streets of Cologne’s city center that many Cologne residents are not so familiar with. You may be familiar with many of them, and yet many Cologne residents rarely visit this part of the city. So why not let yourself be surprised? We see witnesses to many centuries of Cologne’s history, from the modern Mediapark to Roman times. And along the way, I’ll tell you about St. Gereon and Maria Clementine Martin, the construction of the medieval city wall and the Herstatt bankruptcy. The tour ends at St. Andreas. We see, among other things: Hansaring, city wall, Mediapark, St. Gereon, Mariensäule, Zeughaus, Römerbrunnen, Unter Sachsenhausen, St. Andreas
City walk through Cologne’s old town
The Old Town is much more than just pubs and partying. The Old Town is also 2000 years of Cologne and traces of these two millennia can be seen everywhere between the town hall tower and the fish market. Romans and Prussians, brewers and fishwives, locals and foreigners lived here. And of course there are surprising places to discover and exciting stories to tell. Our walk begins at the Heinzelmännchenbrunnen fountain and ends at Heumarkt. We see, among other things: Alter Markt, town hall tower, Heumarkt, Salzgasse, Tünnes un Schäl, Ostermannbrunnen, Fischmarkt, Heinzelmännchenbrunnen
City walk – Along Severinsstraße
Südstadt is pure Cologne. Formerly a working-class district, it is now one of Cologne’s typical colorful neighborhoods and a center of Cologne’s diversity. The heart of Südstadt beats at Chlodwigplatz and the lifeline is Severinsstraße, or Vringsstross as the locals call it. In Roman times, this was already the main road to Bonn and if we follow Severinsstraße, we will find many places that are worth seeing and about which I can tell you particularly nice stories and anecdotes. The tour ends at Chlodwigplatz. We will see, among others: St. Johann Baptist, St. Gregorius im Elend, Karl Berbuer Fountain. St. Severin, Carthusian monastery, Severinstorburg castle
City walk – Through the Rheinauhafen
Cologne has been situated on the Rhine for 2000 years and the river has always been the city’s lifeline. Between Heumarkt and Südbrücke were the harbors and shipyards, but also temporarily the place of execution. And of course the Rhine has a lot to tell. We start near the Heumarkt and the tour ends at the southern end of the Rheinauhafen. We see, among other things: St. Maria Lyskirchen, Malakoffturm, Chocolate Museum, Olympic Museum, Rheinauhafen, Alter Zoll, Bayenturm, Herkuleskran
City walk – Around the Heumarkt
Heumarkt is also the gateway to the old town, but this time we walk in the other direction towards Malzmühle. From there, we walk in an arc past St. Maria im Kapitol, the Gürzenich, the town hall and then arrive back at Heumarkt. There are beautiful things to see and exciting stories to tell everywhere. We see, among other things: Heumarkt, Malzmühle, Overstolzenhaus, St. Maria im Kapitol, Gürzenich, Duftmuseum, City Hall.
City walk – From Heumarkt to Friesenplatz
We start at Heumarkt, walk past the Gürzenich and the Fragrance Museum to the Madonna in the Ruins. We continue past the 4711 House, to the Römerturm and from there to Friesenplatz. There are beautiful things to see everywhere, we will explain the background and tell you the appropriate stories. We see, among other things: Heumarkt, Gürzenich, Duftmuseum, Madonna in the ruins (if open), 4711-Haus, Römerturm, Friesenplatz
Where the Eigelstein got its name from, the story of the Fressklötsch or the legend of St. Ursula and the 11000 virgins – there is a lot to tell on the tour of the Eigelstein and a lot to see. Many cultures live together in the Eigelstein district, life pulsates. And unimpressed by all the hustle and bustle, the “Kölsche Boor” has been watching over the Eigelsteintorburg for over a hundred years. I’ll show you around this quintessentially Cologne district and tell you about the people who live here and their stories. We will see, among other things: Eigelsteintorburg, Kölsche Boor, Stavenhof, Ursulakirchplatz, St.Ursula, Schreckenskammer
