Melaten is not just a cemetery, Melaten is urban history, art history, a landscape conservation area, a cultural space and an oasis in the middle of the city. Before Melaten became a cemetery over 200 years ago, it was already a place of execution and leprosy far outside the city gates. Today, the cemetery is the final resting place for many Cologne residents; there are around 55,000 graves here. And since we live in Cologne, it is of course also the place for many stories and anecdotes.
